 The ancient city of Sur

Southern Castle

This ancient castle is a splendid example of Oman’s architectural heritage and bears witness to the important role played by Sur in the country’s defence. Built in the early 19th century, it served as a fortress against sea invasions. Today, the South Bilad citadel is a popular cultural site, and visitors can explore its interior, admiring exhibitions on weapons, governance and daily life in medieval times. South Minaret One of the city’s most iconic symbols, the South Minaret was built in the early 20th century to guide ships through the surrounding waters.

With its high tower and red and white colours, it offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding coastline and the Arabian Sea, while also bearing witness to the city’s historic importance as a shipping centre.

Ras Al Hadd: sea turtles

A short drive from Sur, Ras Al Hadd is famous not only for its spectacular beaches, but also for being an important nesting site for green and hawksbill turtles. The Ras al-Jinz turtle reserve offers visitors the chance to see these endangered animals up close – a unique and unforgettable experience.

White sand beaches

The beaches of the south are famous for their crystal-clear waters and breathtaking scenery. Relatively isolated, they offer a haven of tranquillity away from the crowds. Visitors can enjoy a day of sunbathing, snorkelling or swimming while admiring the incredible panorama of the Arabian Sea.
